SolTrans Celebrates Local Artist, Mark Eanes
SolTrans will be unveiling a prized piece of art by local artist, Mark Eanes, on March 23, 2016. Mark’s piece is entitled, “Wheel of Time,” and it will be prominently placed at the front entrance of SolTrans’ Operations and Maintenance Facility located at 1850 Broadway in the City of Vallejo. He describes this piece as “a historical narrative of South Solano County’s mass transit program for over a century.”
As the Agency unveils this piece to the public, Mark wants to ensure that credit is given to James Kern, Executive Director of Vallejo Naval Historical Museum and Elizabeth d’Huart of Benicia’s Camel Barn Museum. They were both very generous with their time and resources, and this piece could not have been done without them.
To provide some background into the creation of “Wheel of Time,” SolTrans issued a Call to Artists in the fall of 2015 for public art concepts for the building’s front entrance. “When employees and members of the public enter our new and improved facility, we want to greet them with a beautiful piece of art that speaks to the mission of SolTrans, which is to provide “safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services that effectively link people, jobs, and our communities,” noted SolTrans Executive Director, Mona Babauta. She further emphasized, “There’s a lot of incredible talent in our local community. So, we only invited artists from Vallejo and Benicia to participate in the Call, and we were far from disappointed when the submissions came pouring into our office.”
In fact, custom artwork was submitted for consideration by over 20 local artists. Mark Eanes was announced as the winner this past November.
“All of the artists’ submissions were beautiful and impactful; it was so hard to pick just one.” stated Mandi Renshaw, Program Analyst with SolTrans and a member of the selection panel, which unanimously chose Mark Eanes’ piece. The selection panel, of which Renshaw was a member, was composed of artists, a member of the public, SolTrans employees, as well as Benicia Mayor Elizabeth Patterson and Vallejo Councilmember Jess Malgapo, both of whom are also SolTrans Board Members.
Mark Eanes is a painter, printmaker, photographer, curator, and educator who has been living and working in Benicia over the last 20 years. Mark is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. He has been an active member of the Benicia community, and is the former president of Arts Benicia (a non-profit arts organization) where he continues to serve on its Board of Directors. He has shown his paintings throughout California, as well as nationally and internationally. His most recent project is a twenty-five foot mural installed at the new wing of Vallejo’s Kaiser Hospital. His work may be found in numerous private and corporate collections.
The public is invited to attend the unveiling on Wednesday, March 23rd at 5:00 p.m., at the SolTrans O&M Facility, at 1850 Broadway in Vallejo.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Mark Eanes and the other extraordinary local artists who participated in SolTrans’ Call to Artists.
