Mare Island Route is Extended Again!

SolTrans Mare Island Route will continue thru November 17, 2017

Extended Mare Island Shuttle Press Release

VALLEJO, CA—The SolTrans board approved to extend the Mare Island Route 9 yet again through Friday, November 17, 2017 and continue as a demonstration service. This extension will allow staff time to explore options for public transit service on and off the island and provide the public an extended opportunity to explore Mare Island through the summer and into the fall.

The SolTrans Board of Directors approved the continuation of service at the May 18, 2017 board meeting with the direction to modify the Route 9 schedule and eliminate trips where there is very little to no ridership, as well as reinstate a fare on the route. The route will continue on its current schedule for a few more weeks while staff makes adjustments that will take effect in mid-June.

The Mare Island Route 9 stakeholders came together before the May board meeting to provide the funding needed to extend the route through the summer. SolTrans staff and the stakeholders will continue working throughout the summer to determine the best form of transportation for the island.

“Ridership on the Route 9 hasn’t grown to the level needed to become a permanent part of the local fixed-route system, but we do see a demand for public transportation on and around Mare Island. We’re thinking that maybe a fixed-route service isn’t the best fit at this time for the unique situation of the Island.  We will take the summer to work together with the stakeholders to consider some alternate ways of providing service that better meets the needs of residents, businesses, and schools, at a cost more in line with the ridership.” said Michael Abegg, SolTrans Planning and Operations Manager.
